Ashikaga Gakko was a prominent school teaching Confucianism mainly but was abolished after the Meiji Restoration. It claims it's the oldest educational institute in Japan, though it is unknown when it was really founded, theories varying from the 8th to 12th century. Many of the present buildings are reconstructions of recent years but some are old.

Bannaji Temple [鑁阿寺]

Bannaji is a Shingon Buddhist temple adjacent to Ashikaga Gakko. The temple grounds used to be where the ancestors of Ashikaga shoguns lived, thus still surrounded by a moat.
