Yakuoin is a prominent Shingon Buddhist temple located near the top of Mt Takao-san 599m/1965ft high. Unless you want to do some hiking, use the chairlift or cable car for 930yen round trip, going up constantly or every 15 minutes respectively during the daytime (their destinations are almost the same so take whichever you like).

Musashi Ryobochi Imperial Graveyard [武蔵陵墓地]

This graveyard, which has an atmosphere of a Shinto shrine, is the only official cemetery for Emperors in eastern Japan because the Imperial family had lived in western Japan until the Meiji Era. Here buried are the 123th Emperor Taisho, his wife Empress Jomei, the 124th Emperor Showa and his wife Empress Kojun.

Hachioji castle, built upon a 445-meter (1460-foot) mountain, was constructed and destroyed in the 16th century. Though there's nothing left in its fort area, which is on the top of the mountain (you have to walk to get there), in the residential area on the mountainside near the parking lot, ruins of stone walls remain.

Musashi Mitake Jinja is a Shinto shrine on top of 929-meter (3048-foot) Mt Mitake-san and was founded in 91 BCE according to legend. A cable car operates 2-4 times an hour (1,110yen round trip). Some of the inns above the mountain still maintain traditional buildings. From the shrine, there's a passage leading to the waterfall under which worshippers practice Misogi purification.
Take a bus from JR Mitake Sta. to the cable car.
